Class Descriptions and What to Bring to Sail Lessons

SSYC Junior Sailing

An eight week program with classes that are held at the Yacht Club, here in Milwaukee.  Sailing takes place both inside and outside the breakwater.  The program inspires our youth sailors in building confidence, promoting teamwork and developing good sportsmanship while learning the skills of sailing.

Beginners
Beginner’s classes will be offered to those children (8yrs. & up) with little or no sailing experience. Classes will be held 3 times a week for 3-hour sessions in the Junior Clubhouse and on the water. Children entering this class must pass a swim test and be comfortable in and around the water. Emphasis is placed on having fun while learning the basics of sailing, sailing terminology, knot tying, rigging the Opti’s and wind speed/direction.

Juniors 420 PracticeIntermediates
An Intermediate class will be offered for those children who have successfully completed the beginners program and are ready to advance their skills. Classes will be held 3 times a week for 3-hour sessions in the Junior Clubhouse and on the water. Students in this class will sail in the Optis and 420s in the lake outside of the break wall. Students should be very confident in their sailing abilities and comfortable in the open waters.

Junior Sail Lessons Spinnaker PracticeRacing Tactics
A Racing Tactics class will be offered for those who have completed the intermediate class. Students must successfully complete both the beginners and the intermediate class to be moved into racing tactics. Classes will be held 2 times a week for 7-hour sessions in the Junior Clubhouse and on the water. This class will focus on detailed technique, and competitive racing.
