Opening Sooner Than You Think

mel fabiszak2After another frozen February, Lake Michigan is covered in ice and the Lakers are frozen in place, but spring is just around the corner. As we anticipate the warmer temperatures, and as members plan the projects on their boats, the Slip Committee is busy planning for our very own opening day.

Our next meeting is Thursday, April 9 at 7 p.m. to coordinate the team leaders and work assignments. We will also discuss upcoming projects. The slip opening work party is on Saturday April 11 at 9 a.m. Slips officially open April 15. Before then, no access to the docks or slips will be permitted unless you are a part of the Slip Committee work party.

There have been a few questions regarding the use of dock box brackets. Dock box brackets cannot be used to mount center moorings or poles. The brackets are only designed to support the dock box and they will not withstand lateral forces. The brackets are also designed to support a fiberglass dock box two feet deep by four or six feet wide. If your box is wider than these dimensions mounting it will require additional brackets. Dock box brackets will continue to be installed on the remainder of the slips as soon as weather permits.

Our booth at the Milwaukee Boat Show caught the attention of several prospective new members who were looking to rent slips for the coming season. Some followed through by attending our open house, applying for membership and signing slip contracts. But we still have a number of slips available for lease immediately. That information has been posted on the Join page of the SSYC website. So please tell your neighbors and friends that when they join, if they act quickly, they can still get a slip right away.
