John Barlow and Michael Giannini receive the Al & Erv Nickel Award
Since 1972 the Al & Erv Nickel Award has been presented to members of the South Shore Yacht Club who through their hard work and support of the club have exemplified the true meaning of what a club like SSYC is all about. In the true spirit of the volunteerism and service to the club, past recipients have truly followed the high standards set by the Nickel brothers.
Selection of the recipient(s) is made in the summer of each year by a committee including the Commodore, Vice Commodore as an observer, Chairpersons of the Sail/Race, Powerboat and House Committees and a Life member chosen by the Commodore. The basis of consideration includes at least five years continuous membership, years of service on standing committees, character and sportsmanship of the recipient, participation in sailing, power boating or general Club activities and at least one year of outstanding service. Candidates must be active on a standing committee or in a Club post in the year for which the award is presented.
Whether it be a slip, house or waterfront services project, this year’s winners have worked tirelessly and truly enriched the club with their involvement.
The first recipient started his membership in 1979. He is a life member of the club and is an avid sailor. He sails on his boat named Reah. He has worked countless hours helping the club with his expertise in welding and has left his mark on many projects that he has worked on for the Club. You can find him most of the time smoking his favorite cigars in the smoking area that he helped build.
The second recipient started his membership in 2002. He owns the powerboat Heavy Metal. He has also donated many hours of work to keep our electrical system working properly, and let me tell you that is a very large task due to the age of our building. This person also enjoys and participates in many of the Club activities and calls SSYC his second home.
We are proud to award the 2014 Al & Erv Nickel Award to two very deserving gentlemen: John Barlow and Michael Giannini. Congratulations to both of you!
