In September, the keys to the Breakwater Lighthouse were handed over to Optima Enrichment, a nonprofit which had met the requirements of the National Park Service to gain ownership. The lighthouse had been for sale for two years before Optima Enrichment, founded in 2003 by Randall Melchert, took possession of this almost 90 year old landmark.
In 2011 the Federal Government declared the lighthouse surplus. As part of its bid, Optima Enrichment will open the Lighthouse 4 times each year to the public beginning in 2016. In addition, the plan is to have it open for boating safety classes, a museum, and research and scout projects.
Optima Enrichment founder Randall Melchert will present his organizations ambitious plans for the restoration and the future use of lighthouse at the Wednesday night program on February 26, 2014 beginning at 7:00.
