KedzioraJerryOver the last several months the Club's Insurance Committee has been busy working on the Club's insurance renewal. For this year's insurance budget I requested and it was approved by the Finance Committee a budgeted amount of $84,000 to be budgeted for the Club's insurance coverage from May 1, 2013 thru May 11, 2014.

The reason for this amount was that our broker, M3Co. advised, that Chubb wanted to increase the value of our Club's buildings 4% and our slips 6%. Last year our insurance premiums were approximately $81,000. This would have increased our insurance premium to about $84,000 for the coverage period.(Ironically, Chubb refers to this increase as "Inflation Guard"). I advised our broker that this was unacceptable that that Chubb needed to "sharpen their pencil" and Chubb relented.

Because of the severe storms on the eastern seaboard, both north and south, several insurance companies have now found it desirable to examine Great Lakes marina and Yacht Club business because the Great Lakes are less prone to large insurance losses. As a result, we took advantage of this interest and obtained three proposals that were presented to the Insurance Committee:

  • IMG (International Marine Group)/ New Hampshire Insurance Co. quoted $ 80,053.00
  • M3Co. /Chubb which initially quoted $82,000 and then after receiving competitive information from me requoted $ $74,302.00.
  • Ansay & Associates/Hanover Group quoted: $61,683.00.

After a review of the three proposals, the Insurance Committee elected to award the Club's insurance coverage to Ansay & Associates who represents Hanover Group ( Harbor Risk Program) because they are providing, overall the best value for the Club's insurance coverage. Hanover is providing the same as or slightly better coverage as compared to Chubb for example in the areas of: building coverage, slips and docks and D & O insurance as well as overall umbrella coverage for $10,000,000.

Hanover Group according to A. M. rating: is rated A which meets the terms of our Club's lease requirements regarding insurance coverage.
To give some background on Ansay & Associates, they are one of the largest commercial insurance brokers in the State of Wisconsin with 175 employees and over $22,000,000+ in annual revenue and Ansay has an internal claims specialist similar to M3Co our previous broker. Their main office is located in Port Washington, WI.

On receipt of the coverage book detailing the coverage's and endorsements, the Insurance Committee will have a meeting to review the coverage's to make sure what was quoted and accepted in their proposal is the coverage we are receiving.

I also wanted to report that Milwaukee Yacht Club has also awarded their insurance contract with Ansay/Hanover as well.

I would like to thank the Insurance Committee:
Mel Fabisak, Luke Radomski, Heidi Gaertner, Morgan Tilleman, Tom Frenn, Rick Schoos and Pat Nora for their contributions and very helpful advice during this process.

By the way, both Tom Frenn and Morgan Tilleman are relatively new members. I would encourage new members to become involved with club activities because the combination of older and experienced members and the fresh ideas new members contribute with their insights makes us a better Club.
Have a great and safe boating season.
