When is the weather going to start cooperating?  I know I’m getting tired of the cold and the rain (with a bit of snow mixed in).  But it will get warmer.  Soon, hopefully!

As you prepare your boat for launching, please be careful and avoid those trips and falls.  Tie your ladder to the boat.  If your ladder is older than you are, consider getting a new one.  Don’t take chances and definitely be careful when working on your slip or mooring.  Wear a lifejacket, especially if you are working alone.  The water is obviously very cold, so it is really best to work as part of a team.

Let’s also be mindful of the environment.  Please vacuum or sweep up as much of your sanding dust as possible.  Clean up your spills.  Consider purging your engine’s raw water system of anti-freeze before launching, and take the old antifreeze to one of MMSD’s hazardous waste collection stations.

Thank you to everyone who helped out at the work party on April 13th.  The major effort was replacing the vertical supports for the wave boards in the “U”.  A lot of work got done, but it is only 1/3 complete.  If you can, give Mel a call and offer to help.  Do take time out from the work to have some fun.

Spring has definitely arrived at SSYC and there’s a lot going on.  The wine tasting, if you missed it, was fantastic.  The wine was very good and Sam and the kitchen staff did a fabulous job with the hors d'oeuvres.  And I hope you stayed around for the disco party.

The Kentucky Derby party is right around the corner (May 4th).  And shortly thereafter (May 18th) we’ll have our 100th anniversary party.  Come on down to the club and celebrate with us.  Tom Gale has booked some really great bands for our events this year.  So come on down to the club and try out the new dance floor!

May 18th is also the end of the launch season (assuming the weather begins to cooperate) and the start of our boating fun.  The Sail Race and Powerboat committees have many events planned.  The first Powerboater’s Thursday will be on May 23rd.  The first Wednesday evening race is planned for May 29th.  And the first Saturday regatta is the Skelding on June 1st.  Let the fun begin…

As always, I am honored to serve as your Commodore.

Sailing and Racing

SailboatsIf you are interested in sailing, and more specifically racing, there are ample opportunities to join one of our racing fleets, or to crew on one of the boats in those fleets.  The women's fleet races on Mondays, small boats race on Tuesdays.  Big boats race on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  And the double handed fleet races on Fridays.

You can learn more about the various racing fleets by clicking here.  And the racing schedule (for all fleets) is available here.

PowerboatOur power boaters are active fishermen.  An annual fishing contest is held in July.

In addition, our power boaters host a number of events, usually on Thursdays as well as many weekends.
