Good news for family and friends who’ve been on the fence about joining SSYC. At the December General Membership meeting a By-Law change was approved that reduced the $850 Initiation Fee by 50% through July 31, 2013.

One of the comments most often heard from a prospective member is that they can afford our (very) reasonable annual dues but the initiation fee would create a budget hardship. To that end the Membership Committee proposed the Initiation Fee change to coincide with our centennial celebration. It’s no secret that SSYC along with all private clubs nationwide are trying different ways to bolster declining membership. While we didn’t want to ‘discount’ membership in SSYC we strove for a way to make SSYC membership more affordable.

Now is the time to talk to those crew members and friends who take advantage of your membership to make the affordable move into SSYC membership. We need your help to make that happen so that we can grow and continue our status to be the best darn ‘full service’ yacht club on Lake Michigan.

Other news, we been busy setting up a booth for our third year at the Milwaukee Boat Show, January 18 – 27 at State Fair Park. Volunteers set up and are staffing the booth in three to four hour shifts.

Related to the that we again are planning an Open House for the ‘contacts’ from the boat show as well as McKinley Marina members and any other prospects. The date selected is March 16, in the afternoon with tours of the Clubhouse and beer and brats for our guests.  Attendees with a keen interest in joining will be invited to stick around or return for our St. Patrick’s Day party that evening.

These are all efforts we’re doing to recruit new members but remember YOU are the best recruiting tool we have.

SailboatsIf you are interested in sailing, and more specifically racing, there are ample opportunities to join one of our racing fleets, or to crew on one of the boats in those fleets.  The women's fleet races on Mondays, small boats race on Tuesdays.  Big boats race on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  And the double handed fleet races on Fridays.

You can learn more about the various racing fleets by clicking here.  And the racing schedule (for all fleets) is available here.

PowerboatOur power boaters are active fishermen.  An annual fishing contest is held in July.

In addition, our power boaters host a number of events, usually on Thursdays as well as many weekends.
